This is a stunning set of berry bowls. The paint on a couple is a little faded but overall the decorations are fresh and bright and very well executed.
I told the donor this and they tried to talk me into taking them home as a gift, which was tempting, but seems a bit loose in the ethics department. As an organization we’re incredibly lucky, we have great donors, wonderful people who give us great stuff to further us helping out our neighbors. Over time the staff (myself included) builds relationships with these folks and sometimes they want to do nice stuff for us. Sometimes it’s really hard to say “Thanks, but I can’t.” In a legal sense I don’t think a donation diverted by the donor to a staffer counts as theft, but I’m pretty certain it’s unethical.
So we offer them to you.
There are six of these footed bowls. They feature raspberries, flowers leaves and gilt edges. They are hand painted and three of them are signed and dated. The three that are signed are marked with the initials BMM and dated ’75, ’76 and ’81. We talked with the donor and these were in her collection for a long time and so the dates are 1875, 1876 and 1881.
Which is rather neat.
I’m surprised they’ve survived, intact, this long. They measure about 3 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter. $60
